In the early days of the program, the compound was limited to only the buildings needed: a lab, living quarters, and a place for meals. Not long after Duvall discovered that his staff and test subjects were losing sanity from feeling so cooped up. The "wilderness" he created in response is entirely manmade but feels quite real. There is a wood consisting of hand planted trees and a little stream that leads to a pond with real fish! The "wilderness", fake though it may be has done it's job in easing the stress of anyone starting to feel too cooped up.
